My little ones really loved it. I know my girls love any center that has to do with coloring and this was just up their alley!
Because we were out of white paper in the copy room this week, I printed the copies out in pink paper...go figure!
My little ones see each center twice a week so I set up 2 different worksheets and dice for them.

Grrr I wish you could see what the worksheet looks like in white.

So here is what some of the die looks like white.

The way you play this is so easy and so much fun!

First: You have you student roll both die.

Next: Whatever color they land on is the color they must use to write.

Then: They must sound out the sight word they rolled and write in down once using the color they rolled.

Last: The next player goes!

The student to finish all of their words, wins!

It gets more and more fun for the little ones when they choose words they have already filled out, so for them it gets "intense".

I just loved seeing them work together and read the words.

The good thing about this game it comes it Pre Primer and Primer so your higher level students can challenge themselves with the more difficult words.

When the group saw the center again during the week, I set up a different worksheet to keep it fresh!

My sweethearts had such a blast making this that I am going to make this the newest "Word Work Center".

It was so easy to explain!

For my more advanced students, I will give them the "Roll and Read" from the Primer set. Heres a shot of what that recording sheet and dice look like.

So you can interchange each depending on your group of little ones. Its definitely a great to introduce or review sight words!

For those of you who are parents, think back to the day you brought your first baby home. As wonderful and sweet as they are, theyre work! I remember my sister staying with us for a few days after my twins had come home, and by the second day she said, "this isnt quite as blissful as I thought it would be." Amen! You love them, theyre wonderful, but until youre doing it every day on your own, you dont quite realize all the time, effort, and dedication that they require.

Well, teaching is pretty much the same. You do send the kids home at the end of the day, and you have weekends, holidays, and a glorious summer vacation, but those days spent in the classroom require just about everything you have to give. You have papers to grade, lesson plans to develop, test scores to keep you awake at night, parents to communicate with, professional developments to attend, classroom behavior to maintain, trouble on the playground to deal with, and on and on. Then teachers go home after a day of giving to their students, and have their own families to tend to as well. Can you tell I respect these wonderful people?

Teacher appreciation week is May 5-10 this year, with teacher appreciation day on Tuesday, May 6. I hope you will take the time to recognize your childs teacher and his/her efforts! I know how appreciated it will be!

PPPOE Internet Configuration For OpenSolaris 2008 05

One of the first things I had to learn when I moved from Windows to OpenSolaris was to get my Internet up and running. I had an Airtel broadband connection which followed the PPPOE (Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet) network protocol. I had to experiment a bit and due time got a proper process established for network configuration. So if you are also planning to setup a broadband connection in OpenSolaris, edit the following files accordingly -

/etc/ppp/pppoe.if

INTERFACE
And reboot.

/etc/ppp/peers/ISP

sppptun (what device to use)
plugin pppoe.so (initialize the connection)
connect "usr/lib/inet/pppoec INTERFACE" (connect string)
persist (if the connection dies, bring it back)
user "USERNAME" (username)
noauth (do not make the other side authenticate itself)
noipdefault (let them give you what IP they want to give you)
noccp (no compression)
novj (no compression)
noaccomp (no compression)

Nesse momento desempregado eu tenho ficado mais tempo no condomínio e pela primeira vez estou com preocupações que nunca tive, se aquela doce senhora parar de exigir que eu alugue a vaga da garagem pra ela. Bem, não que seja da minha conta, mas estou preocupado então vou falar mesmo assim. Ouvi dizer que vai cair uma chuva muito forte hoje pela tarde, você se lembrou de fechar todas as janelas do seu apartamento? Não me conhece. Em momento algum eu achei que você fosse a minha tia, apenas advirto para que não aconteça com você algo semelhante, porque se não, daqui dez anos você estará todo sábado à noite nua no banheiro, chorando em posição fetal enquanto esfrega sabonete líquido de lavanda nos glúteos, mas isso é outra história que não vou comentar para não te preocupar. Quanto à vaga admito que não tenho a menor competência, conhecimento, bagagem e estômago para preenchê-la e tenho certeza que você achará algum profissional com todos esses requisitos, apenas não no mundo real. Mas isso é só um detalhe e depois de um tempo você se acostuma, para minha tia por exemplo, o gato é a companhia adequada e aqueles fantoches toscamente confeccionados com meias de algodão são realmente um time de polo aquático da noruega.

Productive Meetings

Dont know what your experience is like, but for me it is the following. Meetings are much more productive when someone is standing at a white board and writes down ideas, risks, problems and what have you. I am sure every single human being who has attended enough meetings has observed the default pattern -- or anti pattern -- in meetings. Everyone has their point of view and does all necessary arguing to protect their idea. They fight each other instead of pulling together towards a common goal. Often after a long and useless meeting it is commonly decided (the only agreement) that another meeting is needed.

One way to counter this behavioral pattern is to mail out an agenda with all the topics and asking the participants to prepare. This might help but most often it does not. I even doubt that every recipient of the mail does read it entirely. It usually drowns in the sea of more important emails.

Now, imagine you are in a pissing contest meeting and someone gets up and starts to write the different points clearly visible down. In a heart beat the whole meeting has structure, everyone turns their head towards the board. Not the loudest voice is heard but all ideas. Often, after some time the whole group is working together towards a -- just identified -- common goal. If you dont believe it, then give it a try at the next deadlocked meeting. You will be amazed how much power a white board and a marker in hand can create.

Why am I writing this? Well, Scrum has this at the core of all of its meetings. In Scrum we have four different meeting types. Sprint Planning meeting, Daily Scrum, Review and Retrospective. Usually each of those meetings is moderated by the Scrum Master. It might be moderated by someone else but it is always moderated! The medium to write on are either index cards or PostIts which are aranged on a white- or corkboard. Those cards are then updated and rearranged during the course of the sprint. A very visual way of management. Alistair Cockburn named it accordingly: Information Radiators.

Next time your are stuck in a non productive meeting just get up and start to use a marker and whiteboard. Everyone in the rooom will be grateful.

Pregnancy Week by Week Week 35

This week Mr. Fix-It and I enjoyed a little getaway to celebrate our 2nd Wedding Anniversary! It was a perfect trip - we got out of the city and felt like we were able to enjoy some quality time together before our little one arrives. We both snuck out of work a little early on Friday and headed up the west coast of Michigan. We stopped in one adorable coastal town after another, exploring and doing some light hiking.

My feat of the trip was climbing 200+ stairs during one of our excursions. At first I felt all, "Im so awesome for doing this" but then I got lapped by a 40w+ pregnant lady trying to induce labor. Oh well, I still made it!

Overall, things are still going wonderfully well and week 35 flew by pretty quickly! My office was closed Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights we were at the hospital for a breastfeeding and our childbirth class, and Friday afternoon we were on our way to Michigan. I can only hope time continues to move at this pace!
