Playroom Tour With Lots of DIY Ideas
After posting about our Alphabet Wall, I had some requests asking to see what the rest of our playroom looked like. So here it is in all its glory (I did straighten it up during nap time. Im sure it will be destroyed again shortly).

The main focal point of the room is our ABC wall. Since it has a lot going on, I thought we needed a bright couch to anchor it into place. I didnt want to spend a fortune and was happy to find just the right playroom futon at Target (looks like they only have it available in blue now). Im not going to lie, its not the most comfortable couch in the world, but kids dont seem to mind.
I always feel happy in this room full of fun and cheerful colors.
For toy storage, I liked the idea of small toys all having a place to be put away. Two IKEA Expedit shelving units provided more than enough storage. The woven storage baskets are from IKEA as well and the other storage bins are part of Targets ITSO storage line.
Whenever we have play dates, the ball pit is one of the most popular hangouts in the playroom. Seriously the kids LOVE it! Weve had this ball pit since Jake was 6 months old and its still one of his favorite toys. You can easily make your own with an inflatable swimming pool and pit balls (we used 200).
Our easel and road play mat are recent additions and can be found at IKEA. The colorful tunnel in the background is another toddler favorite and can be found here.
Jakes train table was a Christmas present from Papa & Gma and is probably the most used item in our the room. The train table is from Toys R Us and was purchased on sale for $119 at Christmas time. The table includes all of the tracks and structures you see in the picture above (such a deal compared to other brands I looked at). I did a ton of research on train tables beforehand and I think that this is one of the best values you can find. Unfortunately its not on sale right now, but I know for the the last few years, usually in November and December, it has gone on sale so keep a look out if you have a little train conductor in your family.
Our lego table is actually just this awesome plastic train table (Jakes favorite toy until he got his Christmas train table), with Duplo baseplates added on top. I used removable adhesive strips to keep the plates in place.
And no playroom is complete without a magnetic board. This was actually one of my first Pinterest inspired creations. The original post by Nic and Kate can be found here. This idea is completely genius! All you need is a $10 oil drip pan, usually found in the automotive section at Walmart. Since its not very pretty on its own, a coat of spray paint dresses it up nicely. I dont remember exactly what we used to hang it on the wall, but I think it was some sort of velcro, removable adhesive strip. Hope you enjoyed the tour. I imagine this room will be a work in progress as Jake gets older. For now the next project on the agenda is a number wall that will reside right above the magnetic board. Cant wait to share it with you once its done

Polka Dot Ceiling Playroom
I had a client contact me about painting the playroom for her grandkids at her house. She was very open to basically anything, and wanted help with the whole project. AKA, I helped her pick out all of the paint colors (I dont ever talk about it here, but I do paint color consultations for exterior and interior walls as well as painting work), for the mural and for the walls/closet, and am also helping with some design work for the room. We will be replacing that ceiling fan with a cool light fixture, and I am also painting all of the furniture that goes in this room. It will be transformed with bright colors (The colors used in the mural on the ceiling).
Here is what the room looked like before:
The walls were brown stripes, and I suggested majorly lightening it up in there! You can see some of the furniture were painting in this photo. Its a kids table/chairs, a bookshelf, a desk/seat, and a jewelry case (She has lots of granddaughters!) I had her paint the walls Sherwin Williams "Swimming", which is a light turquoise, and the inside of the closet is "Daredevil" by SW, also. The trim and doors were getting a new fresh coat of white paint after I came in, and the ceiling had a fresh coat of ceiling white before I painted the mural! I was inspired by the cute vintage wooden characters she had hanging on the wall, that you can see over the crib in that photo above. For some reason, my immediate thought was to do a ceiling mural in there, versus a wall mural. I guess I knew that the walls would have those cute wooden figures on them again (obviously, since we were inspired by them), and then we also needed room for the furniture to remain, since the room also services as a nursery/playroom/gameroom.
Anyway, onto the pics!
I painted dots of all sizes, using a homemade compass. :)
The yellow on the ceiling is SW "Daffodil" and the peach/coral is "Jovial" also by SW.
like I said, we had the inside of the closet painted tomato red, and the doors removed. it will be an arts and crafts closet for the kids. I am coming back to help make it cuter and functional, with cute baskets, boxes, etc.
The ceiling fan will be replaced. Im thinking maybe something like this:

both from IKEA. We dont need it to be the main source of light, since there are lots of can lights in here, so itll mostly be decorative.
I also painted the darker turquoise color on the metal slats on the door, just for fun. Remember, the doors and trim were being painted a brighter white after I left!
thats it for now. I will be back with more pictures of this room when we make some more progress!
