Princess Victoria Weds A Swedish Royal Wedding

Princess Victoria Weds A Swedish Royal Wedding

Few things are more glamorous than a royal wedding! Yesterday, June 19, 2010, the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden to Daniel Westling, a commoner, took place in Stockholm. The 32 year-old, Yale-educated princess had been dating the 36 year-old gym owner for 8 years.

The wedding gown, designed by Pär Engsheden, was made of ivory silk satin. It had a rounded, off-the-shoulder neckline, which sloped to a discreet V in the back, where it met with the train, 5 yards long. The waist had a wide band of silk, and the gown buttoned up in the back.

The cameo crown worn by Victoria, who will one day become Queen of Sweden, was originally given by Napoleon to his wife, Empress Josephine, in 1809. It was also worn by Victorias mother, Queen Silvia, on her wedding day to King Carl Gustaf of Sweden in 1976.

The lace veil originally belonged to Queen Sofia of Sweden. It has been in the family for 150 years and is the same one worn by Princess Victorias mother in 1976.

The teardrop-shaped wedding bouquet contained roses, orchids, lilies, azaleas, and lily-of-the-valley.

After church, the couple took to a carriage, which travelled through the streets of Stockholm, so that the thousands of onlookers could see the Princess and her new husband. The cavalcade included 78 horses!

After the carriage reached the harbor, the couple boarded the royal barge, "Vasaorden":

The sloop is a copy of an original built in 1773; it has a crew of 22.

The couple disembark and walk past the adoring populace to the castle, where their families await:

the Grooms parents, Queen Silvia, King Carl Gustaf.

From the balcony, the couple greeted the crowd and Princess Victoria addressed the nation:

Victorias speech (translated from the Swedish by "Yours, Truly"):

Dear, dear friends: I will begin by thanking the Swedish people for having gotten me my prince. We, my husband and I, are so unbelievably happy and extremely grateful that so many wanted to be here to celebrate with us. This is a huge experience, for us the biggest day of our lives so far. To feel your support means more to us than you can ever understand. It is something unbelievable. Today is a day which we will carry with us in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Thank you!

At the wedding banquet, the guests gathered in a hall decorated with pink roses. The center table is nearly 100 feet long! On either side were 38 tables for those not royalty or foreign dignitaries. The menu consisted of items like lobster, truffle-caviar, veal, and of course champagne.

The beginning of the Kings speech had everyone laughing.

The Grooms speech had the bride in tears.

It began: "Victoria, princess of my heart." He told a story of a time when she had to go for a state visit for thirty days, and he found a box from her, containing thirty letters to him—one for each day theyd be apart. "This story perhaps characterizes you best", he said. He continued by saying: "I love you, Victoria. I am so proud and happy to be your husband." At this point, the bride interrupted him with a kiss.

After dinner came the cake, which had 11 tiers and weighed over 550lb! On a meringue base, were over 100 handmade roses and 40 lilies. Inside, were things like chocolate nonpareilles, champagne mousse, and wild strawberry compote. The white cake was in a clover pattern. On top was the couples monogram, made from sugar.

Next followed the traditional wedding waltz, after which the cameras were turned off and the festivities continued in private.

Congratulations and many happy years to the newlyweds!

princess bakery funfetti cake

princess bakery funfetti cake

Hey guys! It's my 29th birthday today!

It's scary to me that, although I'm turning 29, I still feel as nomadic and unsettled as I did when I was 21. After all, my move to New York will be my 9th move (and 4th state, and 10th apartment/house) within the last 5 years. I'd like to think that I've made some sort of progress in these last few years, but sometimes, I'm not quite sure if I actually have. This past year wasn't easy and taught me that I've still got a lot to learn — especially when it comes to my priorities and figuring out what's important.

But as a June baby, I'm lucky that I get to have a birthday in the middle of the year. Especially since I treat my birthdays the way most people treat New Year's Day — a chance to look at what went wrong over the last year, make resolutions, and reset. This year, that means basically starting over from the quiet, career-focused life I regressed to since moving to San Francisco. I don't have anything too specific in mind, but I do know that a) I want to leave this city ASAP (and that's happening so soon, so yay!) and b) I want this year to be less stressful and funner than the last.

And what better way to kick off that goal than with a lighthearted and whimsical cake?

For this cake, I channeled my inner Coco Cake Land and whipped up this funfetti cake with strawberry cream cheese frosting. The funfetti cake recipe is actually one of Molly's and has been on my blog before — I made it almost two years ago for my third blogiversary and it was just SO DAMN GOOD that I've just been waiting for an opportunity to make it again.

And this time around, I swapped the vanilla flavor used in the original recipe for "Princess Bakery" extract. Princess Bakery is a legit flavor that comes in a bottle and tastes of vanilla, citrus, and almond. It's lovely and the flavor that all your homemade bakery style baked goods have been missing. I used Tessa's ombre frosting technique to create a "dip-dye" effect on my cake, with half the cream cheese frosting flavored with a fresh strawberry puree. I then topped it all off with cotton candy because it's my party and I can do what I want.

So 29 — here I come!

Some baker's notes:
  • This recipe uses a couple of weird ingredients: Princess Bakery emulsion and ground vanilla bean powder. Both are available on Amazon and are worth sourcing — it's what makes this cake special! However, if you just want to make a cake with ingredients you'll likely already have on hand, feel free to use Molly's original recipe with either 2 tablespoons clear vanilla extract or my version with 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract.

  • To get the dip-dyed look, I took my batch of cream cheese frosting and stirred in a few teaspoons of strawberry puree to flavor half the batch and dye it pink. I then used Tessa's ombre frosting technique to create the "dip-dye" effect with the regular cream cheese frosting and strawberry tinted batch. I really recommend using her tutorial (and checking out her cookbook!) as it's got some of the best step-by-step photos I've ever seen!

  • If topping the cake with cotton candy, be sure to serve the cake immediately — cotton candy hardens and shrinks almost immediately when it touches something moist (like frosting). I got my cotton candy from World Market, but you can also buy cotton candy from Or, if you want to splurge and get the stuff fresh, you can use a countertop cotton candy maker (which, not gonna lie, this is currently on my Amazon wishlist)!

Princess Party A Royal Celebration!

Princess Party A Royal Celebration!

Working with Kate Petronis of And Everything Sweet always leads to a fabulous project and a big SMILE! Kate is one of the most talented ladies "in the business" and it is such a thrill every year to see what she dreams up for her little girls birthdays. This year, in honor of her little Olivias 4th birthday, Kate put together a truly ROYAL CELEBRATION using the Amandas Parties To Gos new PRINCESS PARTY PRINTABLE SET.

From the gorgeous castle cake to the sweet treats like Snow Whites chocolate covered Oreo apples, Cinderellas slipper Sixlets, and Ariels chocolate sea shells, Kate created a magical world themed perfectly for her little girls favorite princesses. The letters "OLIVIA" on the front of the dessert table are another one of Kates brilliant creations... each themed for a different princess. You will LOVE the details of this truly spectacular celebration where even Snow White comes by with sweet birthday wishes.

Kate says....

I had every princess you could think of, every bright color that my baby loves, tiaras, dresses, flowers, tulle, if it was girly it was there.  When it came time to plan this party there was no question what the theme was going to be.  She was adamant, PRINCESS!  The only question was, WHICH princess??  "All of them" she said, and then walked away.

So without further adieu, my baby girls princess party...

Upon arrival, each guest was presented with a princess dress (in the event that they forgot their own at home)

Extra jewelry (you can never have too many beads)
And the boys were given knight gear. (so that they could protect the princesses)

Guests were sent home with bags full of goodies, as well as jewels from Princess Jasmine and bubbles.
